What If Healing Didn’t Have to Feel So Heavy?
Healing doesn’t always progress the way we expect it to.
It’s rarely a straight line.
More often, it’s that quiet in-between space where urgency has softened, but clarity hasn’t quite arrived yet.
That’s where this conversation takes place.
In this episode of The Healing in Sharing, we explore a gentler way forward through hypnosis, a healing approach that doesn’t require you to relive everything you’ve been carrying.
For many women, that’s where the hesitation begins. The fear of going back. The fear of feeling it all again.
But what if you didn’t have to?

A Different Way to Heal
Colleen Gill, a board-certified hypnotherapist, offers a perspective that feels both grounding and hopeful.
Your brain is always learning, always repeating, and always reinforcing patterns, whether they help you or not. These patterns can look like grief loops, stress responses, and habits that once felt comforting but now feel heavy.
Hypnosis works by gently guiding the mind into a calm, focused state, allowing those patterns to begin to shift. Not by force or pressure, but through awareness and intention.
During my session with Colleen, what stood out most was this.
I didn’t have to relive my pain.
Instead, I was able to look at it in a calm, peaceful way, almost as if I finally had space between me and the weight I had been carrying.
And in that space, something shifted. I felt lighter, clearer, and even energized. It wasn’t overwhelming. It was gentle.
Breaking the Myths
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis.
And truthfully, they keep many women from even considering it.
So let’s clear a few things up. You are not out of control, you are not asleep, and you cannot get stuck.
In fact, you naturally move in and out of similar states every single day.
When you’re fully absorbed in a movie, when you drive somewhere and don’t remember the turns, and when your mind drifts while doing something familiar. That focused state is where change becomes possible.
Not because you’re losing control, but because you’re finally working with your mind rather than against it.
Why Willpower Isn’t Enough
One of the most powerful takeaways from this conversation is straightforward.
Your brain automates what it believes keeps you safe.
So when a habit becomes tied to comfort, such as a glass of wine at night, emotional eating, or staying busy to avoid feeling, it’s no longer just a choice. It’s a pattern.
And patterns don’t change by willpower alone.
They change when the identity beneath them begins to shift.
Instead of
“I need to stop doing this.”
It becomes
“This is who I am now.”
That’s where hypnosis meets real, lasting change.
Small Shifts That Matter
Healing doesn’t require a complete life overhaul.
In fact, it often starts with something much smaller.
A pause, a breath, and a new way of noticing.
Colleen shares simple practices to support this shift:
- Write down three things you’re grateful for each day
- Drink water before your morning coffee.
- Make one small change instead of ten overwhelming ones
These aren’t just habits.
They’re signals to your brain.
Over time, those signals become your new normal.
You Don’t Have to Carry It All
One of the most meaningful parts of this conversation is the reminder.
You can put it down.
The shame, the old stories, and the version of you who had to survive.
You don’t have to carry it forever.
Healing isn’t about becoming someone entirely different.
It’s about gently letting go of what no longer belongs
and stepping into who you were always meant to be.
If something in you feels curious, even just a little, let that be enough.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You just need to take the next step.
